Frequently Asked Engineering Questions

What voltage drop target should I use for preliminary design?
Many engineers start with about 3% for sensitive branch circuits and about 5% as a combined feeder-plus-branch reference. Treat this as a preliminary design target only; the final limit must follow the latest applicable electrical code, project specification, authority requirements, and manufacturer data.
How are circuit breakers sized for 3-phase motor starting inrush?
Start from the motor nameplate current, starting method, locked-rotor or inrush expectation, cable length, and breaker curve. VoltCheck can help compare a preliminary breaker choice, but final short-circuit, ground-fault, overload, and coordination settings must be confirmed against current code, equipment documentation, and the local approval process.
Can I use VoltCheck calculators offline on industrial plant jobsites?
Yes! VoltCheck is architected as a zero-dependency, client-side progressive web app. Once loaded, all mathematical simulations run locally in your browser without transmitting sensitive project telemetry, allowing reliable calculations in remote plant environments or basements with poor cellular reception.
How does loop burden resistance affect 4-20mA transmitters?
In a 4-20mA current loop, the total circuit burden equals the sum of the receiver input impedance (typically 250 ohms for 1-5V ADCs), intrinsic safety barrier resistance, and two-way cable resistance. At the maximum 20mA signal, the voltage drop across this burden must leave sufficient compliance voltage (typically at least 12V DC) at the transmitter terminals to prevent signal saturation or dropout.
